The PAR, while very satisfactory, is NOT a perfect solution. In
certain (specific) situations it demonstrates significant JPEG artifacting.
Good news. DPS, the makers of the PAR, have a new product out that
has higher specs than the PAR. This should be a practically perfect solution
(since the PAR was very very close). Premiering at the NAB this week.
For highest-end video applications, the PAR doesn't quite make the cut.
For the prices you are talking about (alpha workstation) you should buy the
alpha, buy a compact NT box (Pentium), and use the Pentium as your output
machine.
Save money-- ruggedize your NT box and cart it around to lay-off
animations. You save a minimum of $15K US on buying a deck, AND you don't have
to maintain the deck.
Buy silicon, not iron. Good luck!
